On July 16, 2023, 25-year-old Simon Martinez and his wife were walking home from a party near Thorne and Lorena Avenues in Fresno, California, when they were confronted by an armed man demanding their belongings. During the altercation, Martinez managed to subdue the assailant. At that moment, a vehicle approached, and an individual inside fired shots, striking both Martinez and his wife. Martinez was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries; his wife survived the attack.
In the subsequent investigation, Fresno police identified several suspects connected to the crime. In 2023, authorities arrested 22-year-old Jesse Castillo on charges of robbery and murder, and 22-year-old Zachariah Rodriguez as an accessory to murder. Further inquiries led detectives to 19-year-old Angel Gonzalez, identified as the individual who fatally shot Martinez and wounded his wife. On July 16, 2024, exactly one year after the homicide, police apprehended Gonzalez at an apartment complex near Shaw and Valentine Avenues in Fresno. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges including murder, carjacking, and carrying a loaded stolen firearm.
The arrests brought some measure of relief to Martinez's family, who had been actively seeking justice for his death. His wife, Leticia Rodriguez, had publicly appealed for assistance in identifying the perpetrators, describing Martinez as a hardworking individual with no criminal history.
