On the evening of May 16, 2023, 49-year-old Ryan Abbott was fatally shot at Campland on the Bay, a popular RV resort in San Diego's Pacific Beach area. The incident occurred around 10:08 p.m. near the resort's pool area, where Abbott was with a small group. A brief verbal confrontation ensued between Abbott and another individual, later identified as 38-year-old Michael Callahan. Callahan left the area briefly, returning with a handgun, and shot Abbott in the chest.
Emergency responders transported Abbott to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m.
Following the shooting, Callahan fled but was located shortly thereafter in his motorhome at the resort. He was arrested without incident, and the handgun believed to have been used was recovered at the scene. Callahan was booked into San Diego County Jail on one count of murder.
In subsequent court proceedings, Callahan was formally charged with first-degree murder and a firearm enhancement. During his arraignment, he remained motionless and calm. If convicted, Callahan faces up to 50 years to life in prison. His next court appearance was scheduled for May 31, 2023.
