On the evening of April 29, 2023, at approximately 9:24 PM, Contra Costa County deputy sheriffs responded to a reported shooting in the 400 block of Clifford Court in Bay Point, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Jesus Gallegos, a resident of Bay Point, suffering from a gunshot wound. Tragically, Gallegos was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, authorities detained and interviewed 18-year-old Kai Rossberg of Concord.
He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $1 million.
In the ensuing months, the case underwent further investigation. By December 2023, prosecutors elected to charge Rossberg with involuntary manslaughter, accompanied by a firearm enhancement, rather than pursuing a murder charge. This decision was based on findings suggesting the shooting may have been accidental.
In September 2024, Rossberg, then 20 years old, pleaded no contest to the involuntary manslaughter charge. He received a seven-year state prison sentence, with credit for 268 days already served in county jail. At the time of sentencing, he remained in county custody, awaiting transfer to the state prison system.
The tragic death of Jesus Gallegos and the subsequent legal proceedings against Rossberg underscore the profound and lasting impact of firearm-related incidents on individuals, families, and communities.
