On April 7, 2023, at approximately 10:20 p.m., 20-year-old San Diego resident Carlos Arvizu was fatally shot in front of a residence in the 100 block of East Park Avenue in San Ysidro. Responding officers found Arvizu suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:06 p.m.
Investigations revealed that Arvizu had been visiting friends in the area when he was confronted by individuals in a vehicle.
The confrontation escalated, leading to Arvizu being shot from within the vehicle, which then sped away from the scene.
Over the following weeks, the San Diego Police Department made significant progress in the case, arresting three suspects in connection with the murder. On May 10, 2023, 18-year-old Jacob Christopher Kozik was apprehended in San Bernardino. Two days later, on May 12, 19-year-old Marcos Anthony Carbajal of Chula Vista was arrested. The third suspect, 18-year-old Adrian Mark Rodriguez, was already in custody on unrelated charges when he was re-booked for Arvizu's murder on May 23.
The arrests were the result of a thorough investigation by the Homicide Unit, which identified the suspects through various leads and evidence. All three individuals were booked into San Diego Central Jail without bail, facing charges of murder. Their arraignments were scheduled in Central Division Felony Court.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
