On January 14, 2023, at approximately 2:06 a.m., 21-year-old Romeo Xavier Portillo was fatally shot near the intersection of Market Street and South Broadway in downtown Turlock, California. Another individual, a 20-year-old male, sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital, where he remained in stable condition.
The Turlock Police Department's investigation revealed that the shooting resulted from an altercation at a local bar and was not a random
act of violence. Evidence suggested the involvement of multiple firearms and individuals. Detectives identified 22-year-old Gary Harold Jackson Jr. as the primary suspect in Portillo's death.
On March 28, 2023, Jackson was apprehended in Cobb County, Georgia. He had entered the Cobb County Police Department to apply for an alcohol permit when a routine background check revealed the outstanding arrest warrant issued by Stanislaus County authorities. Jackson was taken into custody without incident and awaited extradition to California to face charges of homicide and attempted homicide.
Portillo's mother, Sharon Threadgill, expressed profound grief over the loss of her son, describing Jackson as a family friend who had visited their home multiple times following the shooting. She believes that envy may have been a motive behind the crime.
The Turlock Police Department emphasized its commitment to ensuring that individuals who commit violent crimes within the community are apprehended and held accountable. Chief Jason Hedden stated, "We will not tolerate violent crime in Turlock. Our team is relentless, and they will not stop until those who commit crimes in our community are arrested, charged, and held accountable for their actions."
