On January 10, 2023, at approximately 9:16 p.m., 23-year-old San Diego resident Najee Hakeem Woods was fatally shot while walking along the north sidewalk of the 6200 block of Akins Avenue in the Encanto neighborhood. Responding officers found Woods with a gunshot wound to his upper body; despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:33 p.m.
Investigators believe that a vehicle, described as a dark gray, newer model small SUV—possibly a Honda—approached Woods as he walked. An occupant of the vehicle fired at Woods before fleeing northbound on 62nd Street.
As of March 8, 2023, authorities had not identified any suspects in connection with Woods' murder. San Diego County Crime Stoppers and the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit have sought public assistance in identifying and locating the individual(s) responsible. A reward of up to $1,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
Woods was remembered as a beloved member of the City of Praise Church, where he contributed to the music ministry as a self-taught drummer and bassist. He was known for his carefree and happy nature, his love for music, and his dedication to his family and friends.
