On June 17, 2023, during a Juneteenth celebration at NTC Park in Liberty Station, San Diego, 20-year-old Jonathan Robert Shields-Pullum was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m., prompting attendees to flee the area. Officers arrived to find Shields-Pullum with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. A second victim, also 20, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg and was treated at a local hospital.
Investigations revealed that a physical altercation had erupted near the event's conclusion. Shortly thereafter, an individual drew a handgun and fired at both victims before fleeing. Authorities initially described the suspect as a man in his mid-20s wearing dark clothing. The motive remained unclear, with detectives working to determine whether the victims were involved in the fight, targeted for unknown reasons, or innocent bystanders.
In February 2024, a significant development occurred when San Diego Police arrested 26-year-old Anthony Jones in connection with the shooting. He was apprehended at a residence in Murrieta, California. Authorities indicated that Jones and Shields-Pullum were acquainted, though specific details were withheld due to the ongoing investigation.
Shields-Pullum was remembered as a charismatic and intelligent individual with aspirations to join the Navy and pursue an engineering degree, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Petty Officer 2nd-Class Elijah Pullum. His untimely death left his family and community grieving the loss of a young man poised to embark on a promising future.
