On January 2, 2024, at approximately 11:25 PM, the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting at a residence in the Kickapoo Marina Subdivision near Livingston, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies identified the homeowners as 42-year-olds William Kenneth Schultea and Britney Alicia Campbell, both from Livingston. Inside the residence, officers discovered the body of 50-year-old James Michael McClanhan, also of Livingston, who had succumbed to gunshot wounds.
A search of the property led to the discovery of a substantial quantity of narcotics, indicating potential illicit activities at the location. Further investigation revealed that three other individuals had sustained gunshot wounds during the incident: William Schultea, one of the homeowners; 33-year-old Derrek Monroe Hughes of Shelbyville; and 50-year-old David Eugene Stimmell of Trinity. Hughes and Stimmell were located later that night and transported to a local hospital before being transferred to out-of-county facilities for additional treatment. Schultea was found at a residence in San Jacinto County with a single gunshot wound and was also taken to an out-of-county hospital for care.
The investigation, conducted by the Polk County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Texas Rangers, led to several arrests. David Eugene Stimmell was charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and violation of a protective order; he is currently held in the Polk County Jail with bonds totaling over $1 million. Britney Alice Campbell was charged with possession of a controlled substance and released on a $30,000 bond. Warrants have been issued for William Eugene Schultea for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a controlled substance. Similarly, Derrek Kenneth Hughes faces warrants for parole violations, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and failure to identify as a fugitive.
Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing but believe there is no immediate danger to the public. The Polk County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with information related to the shooting to contact their Criminal Investigation Division or submit anonymous tips through Polk County Crime Stoppers.
