On December 19, 2023, at approximately 8:07 p.m., 25-year-old Raymundo Martinez-Gutierrez was fatally shot in McAllen, Texas. Responding to reports of a vehicle accident in the 2800 block of Business Highway 83, McAllen Police Department officers discovered Martinez-Gutierrez unresponsive in his crashed vehicle. Emergency medical personnel determined he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds; he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Investigations revealed that prior to the shooting, Martinez-Gutierrez had been involved in a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 2700 block of Date Palm Avenue. Upon leaving the scene, he was pursued by individuals known to him. The assailants, driving a white Ford Expedition, intercepted Martinez-Gutierrez's silver Mazda 3 and fired multiple shots from the front passenger side, leading to the fatal injuries.
Authorities identified three suspects in connection with the homicide: 30-year-old Eliezer Morales of McAllen, 27-year-old Luis Mondragon of Mission, and 48-year-old Jose Govany Ipina-Rosales, believed to be from Mexico. Mondragon was apprehended on March 27, 2024, after McAllen police learned he was in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was charged with murder and held on a $1 million bond.
However, on June 25, 2024, the Hidalgo County District Attorney's Office dismissed the murder charge against Mondragon, citing insufficient evidence.
On October 1, 2024, Morales was apprehended following a failed smuggling attempt. He was caught being smuggled back into the United States from Mexico after a vehicle chase in Mission, Texas. Morales was taken into custody and charged with murder in connection to Martinez-Gutierrez's death.
