Wayne Bertram Williams and the Atlanta Child Murders
Overview
Wayne Bertram Williams is an American convicted murderer and suspected serial killer most closely associated with the Atlanta Child Murders, a terrifying series of killings that took place in the Atlanta, Georgia area from 1979 to 1981. The victims were mostly Black children, teenagers, and young adults. The murders created panic across Atlanta, changed daily life for families, and led to one of the largest murder investigations in the city's history.
Williams was born on May 27, 1958, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in the Dixie Hills area and became interested in radio, photography, and music promotion. By the early 1980s, he presented himself as a young talent scout and music producer. Investigators later focused on him after surveillance teams near the Chattahoochee River heard a splash in the early morning hours of May 22, 1981, and then stopped Williams as he drove across the South Cobb Drive bridge. Two days later, the body of Nathaniel Cater was found downstream.
Williams was convicted only of the murders of two adult victims, Jimmy Ray Payne and Nathaniel Cater. He was not tried for the child murders. However, after his conviction, law enforcement attributed many of the other Atlanta child murder cases to him and closed a number of them. Williams has repeatedly denied responsibility and has maintained his innocence. The case remains controversial because some victims' relatives and investigators have questioned whether Williams committed all, some, or any of the murders beyond the two for which he was convicted.
The Pattern of the Crimes
The killings began in 1979 and continued into 1981. Many victims disappeared while walking to stores, going to school, visiting recreation areas, or moving through familiar neighborhoods. Some bodies were found in wooded lots, abandoned areas, dumpsters, riverbanks, and waterways. Several victims died from asphyxiation or strangulation. Others were killed by blunt-force trauma, stabbing, or gunshot wounds. The repeated disappearances of young people in ordinary public places created a climate of fear in Atlanta, especially among Black families whose children fit the victim profile.
As the investigation grew, police and federal agents looked for patterns in where the victims vanished, where their bodies were found, and what physical evidence was recovered. Fiber evidence became central to the case. Prosecutors later argued that fibers and dog hairs found on some victims matched items connected to Williams' home, car, and dog. This evidence was especially important in the trial for Jimmy Ray Payne and Nathaniel Cater.
