Rex Heuermann and the Gilgo Beach Murders

Rex Heuermann is a Long Island architect from Massapequa Park, New York, who became one of the central figures in the long-running Gilgo Beach murder investigation. He was arrested in July 2023 after a renewed multi-agency investigation linked him to a series of killings that stretched from 1993 to 2010. On April 8, 2026, Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted responsibility for an eighth death, bringing a major legal turning point to one of the most notorious serial murder cases in modern New York history.

Who Heuermann Was Accused of Being

For years, the Gilgo Beach case frightened Long Island because the victims were found in scattered locations near Ocean Parkway, Gilgo Beach, Fire Island, Manorville, and other parts of Suffolk County. Prosecutors said Heuermann targeted vulnerable women, many of whom worked as sex workers, and used careful planning to hide his crimes. Investigators built the case through cellphone records, burner phone patterns, witness information, vehicle evidence, and DNA analysis, including discarded food items recovered during surveillance. Authorities said the pattern that emerged was one of repeated stalking, calculated contact, murder, and disposal of bodies in remote areas.

The Nature of the Crimes

According to prosecutors, Heuermann murdered women over a span of nearly two decades. Several victims were strangled, and some were dismembered after death. The locations where remains were found helped investigators connect killings that had once seemed separate. In some cases, body parts were discovered years apart, which added to the confusion and delayed identification. The crimes became especially infamous after multiple sets of remains were found along the South Shore of Long Island beginning in late 2010 and 2011, turning the Gilgo Beach investigation into a national story.

  • Valerie Mack — murdered in 2000. Mack, a 24-year-old woman from Philadelphia, was last seen in New Jersey. Some of her remains were found in Manorville, New York in 2000, and additional remains were found near Ocean Parkway in 2011.
  • Jessica Taylor — murdered in 2003. Her remains were also found in separate locations, including Manorville and later near Ocean Parkway, reflecting the same disturbing pattern seen in other cases.
