Georgann Hawkins, an 18-year-old student at the University of Washington, vanished in Seattle, Washington, on June 11, 1974. A bright and beloved young woman, she was finishing her freshman year where she had maintained an A average. On the evening of June 10, she attended a party with a sorority sister before heading to her boyfriend's fraternity house to pick up some notes for her upcoming Spanish finals. She arrived at the Beta Theta Pi house around 12:30 a.m. on June 11 and left about half an hour later for the short 90-foot walk back to her Kappa Alpha Theta sorority house. The alley she walked through was well-lit, and many students were awake studying for exams. A friend in a second-story room overlooking the alley even had a brief conversation with her as she passed. He later recalled hearing a strange cackling laugh in the darkness, which Georgann also seemed to notice. She was last seen walking down the alley, just 50 feet from the safety of her sorority house door. When she hadn't returned by 2:00 a.m., her roommate grew concerned and contacted her boyfriend, who confirmed she had left his residence an hour earlier. The police were notified later that morning, and due to a string of recent disappearances of young women in the area, they immediately began an investigation. Years later, just before his execution in 1989, serial killer Ted Bundy confessed to the abduction and murder of Georgann Hawkins. He provided a chillingly detailed account to investigator Robert Keppel, explaining how he had used a ruse to gain her trust. Bundy claimed he approached Georgann in the alley, limping on crutches and dropping a briefcase, asking for her help to carry it to his car. The kind-natured Georgann agreed to help. When she bent down to place the briefcase in his vehicle, he struck her on the head with a crowbar he had hidden, knocking her unconscious. He then forced her into his car and drove away. Bundy stated that when she regained consciousness and began to talk incoherently about her Spanish exam, he knocked her out a second time before ultimately strangling her to death. Bundy claimed to have taken Georgann to a secluded area near Lake Sammamish. He also alleged that he later decapitated her and buried her head in a separate location from the rest of her body. He suggested that some of her remains, specifically a leg bone and vertebrae, were found at a site in Issaquah where the bodies of two other victims, Janice Ott and Denise Naslund, were discovered. However, these partial remains were never positively identified as belonging to Georgann Hawkins. Following his confession, investigators searched the area Bundy described, but no further remains were ever found. Despite Bundy's detailed confession, Georgann Hawkins is still officially listed as a missing person, as her body has never been recovered, and the claims about the partial remains have not been confirmed. The case is a haunting example of a vibrant young life cut short, leaving a lasting scar on her family and friends who remember her as a kind and energetic person.
