In the summer of 1973, a 20-year-old woman named Rosemary Buck vanished from Syracuse, New York, leaving behind a life filled with both personal struggles and future aspirations. On August 11, the young mother was last seen hitchhiking at the corner of Sixth North Street and Wolf Street around noon. She was wearing a white coat and blue jeans at the time. Rosemary lived in an apartment on Wolf Street and was a mother to a young son. Her life at the time was complicated; she was contending with a difficult marriage, as her husband was incarcerated, and she had previously been hospitalized for mental health issues. Compounding her worries was the fear that child protective services might intervene in her family's life. Despite these challenges, Rosemary had plans to complete her high school education and pursue a career in nursing. The day she disappeared, Rosemary had an emotional conversation with her mother, expressing her exhaustion and her fears about losing her son. She reportedly told her mother that if the pressure from child protective services continued, she would run away, and she asked her mother to fight for her son if that happened. Later that day, her mother left with Rosemary's son, and when they returned in the evening, Rosemary was gone. A neighbor reported seeing her get on the back of a motorcycle. Friends knew of her interest in attending rock concerts and her expressed intention to eventually travel to Boston, Massachusetts, to meet a male friend. She was also known to frequent the former Yellow Balloon Bar on Thompson Road. In the years following her disappearance, a few unsettling clues emerged, but none led to answers. A couple of years after she went missing, her sister-in-law, who lived in Texas, received a strange phone call from two women who claimed to be in Cleveland. One of the callers warned the other to be careful what she said and not to reveal her name. The sister-in-law noted that the caller seemed to know details about the family that only Rosemary would be aware of. Despite this and other potential leads, Rosemary's case grew cold. Initially, her family thought she might have run away to escape her troubles, but as time went on, they began to fear that she had met with foul play. There has been no activity on her Social Security number since she vanished. The disappearance of Rosemary Buck remains an unsolved case, a painful mystery for a family left with only questions and the vague memories of her young son, who was later adopted by his grandparents.
