In the late winter of 2023, a sense of unease began to creep into a Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, community. Thirty-eight-year-old Jake Joseph Corbiere, a man with a thin build, standing at 5'10" with brown eyes and short brown hair, was last seen on March 12th in the 0-100 block of Churchill Avenue. He was a member of the nearby Garden River First Nation. Distinctive features like three hoop earrings in his left ear, a dragon blade tattoo on his left forearm, and another dragon tattoo on his right shoulder made him easily recognizable. On that Sunday, Jake was with his life partner when he left his home with another man who has not been publicly identified. He mentioned to his partner that they were heading to a nearby Tim Hortons, a simple, everyday errand from which he would never return. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, the initial concern for Jake's well-being grew into a widespread search filled with increasing desperation. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service began an investigation, and numerous grid searches were conducted by officers, including the Canine Unit and detectives, with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police. Investigators delved into his financial records and interviewed community members, but these efforts yielded no answers as to his whereabouts. The lack of any communication from Jake was deeply out of character, and as time stretched on, the official classification of his disappearance shifted. What was once a missing person case was eventually deemed a major crime, with investigators stating they believe foul play was involved in his vanishing. The community, particularly the Garden River First Nation, has been profoundly affected by Jake's disappearance. Vigils have been held, where family and friends have gathered in solemn solidarity, their hopes for his safe return diminishing with each passing day. His family has spoken of their anguish and the difficulty of grieving without knowing his fate. In an effort to generate new leads, the Garden River First Nation has offered a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to locating Jake. The case of Jake Corbiere is an ongoing story of a man who seemingly vanished after a routine outing. Despite extensive police searches, public appeals for information, and a significant financial reward, the silence surrounding his disappearance has been deafening, leaving a family and a community in a painful state of uncertainty.
