In the early autumn of 2017, a 22-year-old recent university graduate from Montreal, Jesse Clint Galganov, embarked on what was meant to be an eight-month backpacking adventure through South America and Asia. This trip was a well-deserved break before he was set to attend medical school. Jesse, who held dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship, meticulously planned his journey. He flew from Montreal to Lima, Peru, on September 24, 2017, and spent a few days exploring the city. On September 27, he took an overnight bus to Huaraz, a city known as a gateway to the Andes. The following day, September 28, he sent a text to his mother, letting her know he was about to begin a four-day trek on the Santa Cruz trail and would likely be out of contact until early October. This was the last time his family would hear from him. Jesse was last seen on October 1, 2017. After arriving in Huaraz, he stayed at a local hostel and spent a day gathering supplies for his hike. He then set out on the popular but challenging Santa Cruz trail. On the evening of September 30, he camped with a pair of French hikers who later reported that Jesse seemed to be suffering from a headache and diarrhea, possible symptoms of altitude sickness. Despite this, they said he appeared to be in good spirits the next morning when he set off early on the trail. Later that day, around 3:30 PM, he was seen by a group of Czech hikers near Punta Union Pass, where he asked for water. This would be the last confirmed sighting of Jesse Galganov. His bus ticket for his return journey on October 2 and a flight to Bolivia scheduled for October 5 went unused. The disappearance of Jesse Galganov launched an extensive and heart-wrenching search effort led by his parents, who traveled to Peru and spent months on the ground. They hired private search and rescue teams, including an elite Israeli firm, utilized drones to scour the mountainous terrain, and offered a significant reward for information. The investigation faced numerous challenges, including inconsistencies in statements from the hostel where Jesse stayed and the fact that he had not registered at the trailhead before his hike. Local muleteers were reportedly hesitant to cooperate with authorities. Despite these exhaustive efforts, which incurred substantial costs, no trace of Jesse or his belongings has ever been found. Over time, his mother has come to believe that he may have succumbed to the effects of the high altitude while on the trail. The case remains an unsolved and deeply felt mystery, a cautionary tale of a young man with a promising future who vanished while pursuing his dream of exploring the world.
