On a spring day in 1972, a 45-year-old wife and mother named Francis Muriel Sarah Anne Harris vanished from her home in Apsley, Ontario, leaving behind a mystery that has endured for decades. The last day she was seen was Friday, April 21, 1972. That morning, Francis accompanied her husband, Stanley, to a medical appointment in the nearby city of Peterborough. On their way back to their house on Highway 28, they made stops in the village of Lakefield, possibly at the post office and the bank. They arrived home around 11:00 a.m. and had lunch together. Shortly after, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Stanley left for his job, leaving Francis at home alone. When their 13-year-old son, Rod, returned from school at about 3:40 p.m., he found the house empty and his mother gone. Francis has not been seen or heard from since that day. The initial days following her disappearance were marked by a concerning lack of communication. It wasn't until three days after she was last seen that her husband officially reported her missing to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Stanley suggested to investigators that his wife might have just "taken off." However, this theory was questioned by Francis's family, who knew her as a dedicated mother to her three children. Adding to the confusion was the fact that all of her personal belongings, including her purse, clothing, and cherished heirlooms, were left behind in the house. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being 5'1" tall and weighing around 99 to 100 pounds, with a slender build. She had short, wavy, grey or white hair that may have been dyed black, and brown eyes. She wore glasses and had false teeth. The clothes she was thought to be wearing were black slacks, a blouse, a pink cardigan, and black pull-on shoes. Over the more than 50 years since Francis Harris disappeared, the investigation into her case has remained open, with authorities suspecting foul play. The OPP has conducted multiple searches of the property where the Harris family lived. In 2012, investigators dug up parts of the five-acre property, and in November 2023, they returned to excavate inside and around a barn, using cadaver dogs to aid in the search. Unfortunately, these extensive searches have not yielded any evidence to move the investigation forward. Police have also released a forensic artist's sketch depicting what Francis might have looked like at age 65, in the hopes of generating new leads. The case has been the subject of ongoing media attention and volunteer efforts by organizations dedicated to finding missing persons. Stanley Harris passed away in June 2021 at the age of 92, taking any potential knowledge of the events of that day with him. The unexplained disappearance of Francis Harris remains a painful and unresolved chapter for her family and the community of Apsley, a persistent mystery that continues to prompt questions and a search for answers.
