In the late afternoon of September 18, 1983, 33-year-old Marilyn Ann Neely was seen by a friend driving her 1975 Dodge Dart southbound on Goodfellow Road in Peterborough County, Ontario. This would be the last confirmed sighting of the mother of two. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being 5'7" and weighing approximately 131 pounds, with short red hair and green eyes. She was reportedly wearing a red ski jacket, a white sweater, blue jeans or cream-colored pants, and beige cowboy boots. She was also carrying a green vinyl purse with a white shoulder strap. Her family reported her missing the morning after she was last seen. Prior to her disappearance, it was reported that she had been in a depressed and suicidal state. Five days later, on September 23, 1983, Marilyn's Dodge Dart was discovered abandoned on the Five Point Trail access road, about 11 kilometers west of Highway #507. A group of hunters found the vehicle and moved it before notifying the authorities. An extensive search of the rugged, remote area was conducted by police, but it yielded no signs of Marilyn. That same day, a woman matching Marilyn's description was seen walking west along the road from where the car was found. There were other unconfirmed sightings as well. A couple who drove past the police search reported seeing a woman walking in the opposite direction about a mile down the road; however, as they approached, the woman turned her head towards the woods, obscuring her face. Another report came from a camper at Otter Lake who told a cab driver searching for Marilyn that he had seen a "disoriented" woman walking along the highway days earlier who got into a blue car. The disappearance of Marilyn Ann Neely has left her family with decades of unanswered questions. Her daughter, Ann-Marie, who was only ten years old when her mother vanished, has actively sought answers and created a Facebook page called "Missing People of Canada Unsolved Cold Cases" to support other families of missing persons. While police have stated there is insufficient evidence to classify her disappearance as a homicide, her family believes foul play was involved. The case remains an open and unsolved missing person investigation. Despite the passage of time and the lack of new leads, the hope of one day finding out what happened to Marilyn persists for her loved ones. The Peterborough Police Service continues to list her as a missing person and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
