Around 5:20 a.m., Revelstoke RCMP noticed suspicious activity involving the vehicle and discovered it had been reported stolen. This prompted a police pursuit down Airport Way, a road Joshua likely did not realize would lead to a dead-end dirt track in a recreational area known as "12 Mile," south of Revelstoke. With the car stuck and police closing in, Joshua fled into the dense, unforgiving wilderness, disappearing into the cold December landscape. He was last seen wearing a t-shirt and possibly a jacket, ill-equipped for the harsh conditions of a mountainous forest in winter. The initial search for Joshua was complicated and fraught with caution. His companion, Heather, was apprehended near the abandoned vehicle, but Joshua was nowhere to be found. An immediate search was launched by police, including a helicopter and a canine unit, but Revelstoke Search and Rescue was initially held back. This delay stemmed from a serious concern: the discovery of two stolen long-arms and a replica pistol inside the ditched car led authorities to believe Joshua could be armed and dangerous. It wasn't until about 30 hours later, after his companion reportedly told police that Joshua was not carrying a weapon when he fled, that a more extensive search involving Search and Rescue was initiated on December 21. Despite their efforts, which continued for days, no sign of Joshua was found—not a footprint, not a piece of clothing, nothing to indicate which direction he had gone after vanishing into the woods. In the years that have followed, the silence from the forest has been deafening for Joshua's family, particularly his mother, Charlene Ehlert. She has made numerous trips from Manitoba to Revelstoke, often hitchhiking, to walk the very ground her son was last seen on, relentlessly searching for answers and a way to bring him home. Her search has been joined at times by dedicated volunteers, but the vast and difficult terrain has yielded no clues. The investigation into Joshua's disappearance remains open. The circumstances of that December morning—a police chase, a stolen vehicle containing firearms, and a desperate flight into the wilderness—paint a complex picture. Officially reported missing on January 2, 2014, Joshua Jeffs vanished after running from the law into the rugged backcountry of British Columbia, leaving behind a profound and lingering mystery that his loved ones are still trying to solve.
