In the autumn of 1985, a heart-wrenching story began to unfold on the Canadian prairie, centered around the disappearance of a young boy named Jonathan Uriah Molina. At just three years old, Jonathan was last seen on October 29, 1985, in a vehicle on the White Bear First Nation, near Carlyle, Saskatchewan. He was in the company of his mother, Maria Del Carmen Molina, and his two-year-old brother, Benjamin. The family, who resided in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was traveling when their journey took a tragic and mysterious turn. The last confirmed sighting of the family was at a gas station in Carlyle, where Maria had stopped for fuel and to repair a tire. She reportedly inquired about the cost of a bus ticket to Vancouver, suggesting a sense of urgency or a change in travel plans, before driving away with her two young sons. The day after their last sighting, on October 30, 1985, the white 1980 Thunderbird belonging to Maria was discovered burned out in a swampy area on the White Bear First Nation. There was no sign of Maria, Jonathan, or Benjamin. The initial scene offered few clues, and with no one reported missing at the time, the investigation had little to go on. It wasn't until the spring of the following year that the case gained momentum when hunters found children's clothing, a woman's jacket, a boot, and car keys in the woods. This discovery prompted a renewed search, which led to Maria's suitcase and identification being found hidden in the bush about 100 yards from the car. A year after the family vanished, in October of 1986, the case took a devastating turn when the skeletal remains of Maria and an infant were found in close proximity to where the car had been located. Maria was identified through her dental records, and authorities presumed the other remains belonged to her youngest son, Benjamin. Tragically, extensive searches for Jonathan were unsuccessful, and he has never been found. The official cause of death for Maria and Benjamin was believed to be exposure, with no evidence of foul play indicated by the authorities at the time. The case of Jonathan Uriah Molina remains an active and unresolved missing person file with the F Division RCMP Historical Case Unit. The overview of this deeply sorrowful case is that a three-year-old boy vanished under perplexing circumstances alongside his mother and younger brother, and while the remains of his family members were eventually located, his own fate remains an enduring mystery.
