In the pre-dawn hours of September 10, 2019, 31-year-old Brandon Mark Pollock was last seen leaving his family’s home in the area of Herkimer and Caroline Streets in Hamilton, Ontario. His mother heard him leave around 4:00 a.m., something he often did to clear his head, but he would always come back a couple of hours later. Concern grew when Brandon neither returned home nor showed up for school later that day. His mother’s worry prompted her to report him missing, an act that was deeply troubling as this disappearance was described as being out of character for him. Brandon was known to lead an active lifestyle; he was a mountain climber who often walked or used public transit and frequented Bayfront Park and the downtown core. Later that same morning, a strange and pivotal encounter took place on Lake Ontario. Three men on a boat near the Lift Bridge noticed a man swimming alone in the middle of the boat channel, approximately one kilometer from the shoreline. They approached the swimmer to check on his well-being, but he told them he was okay and waved them on. The boaters felt that the situation was not normal and decided to circle back a second time, recording their conversation with the man. Once again, the swimmer insisted that he was fine and encouraged them to move along. Later that evening, after seeing media reports about Brandon’s disappearance, the boaters realized the significance of their encounter and contacted the police, providing them with the video they had taken. Upon viewing the video, Brandon's family confirmed their belief that the man in the water was indeed him. He is described as a white male, standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 165 pounds with a medium build, and having a distinctive brown birthmark on the right side of his neck below his ear. Despite the video evidence providing a last known sighting, it offered few answers and only deepened the mystery. The investigation has remained open in the years since he was last seen, but authorities have reported no new leads. The case of Brandon Pollock is a perplexing one, centered on a man who seemingly vanished after being spotted in a vulnerable situation where he calmly refused offers of help, leaving his family with lingering questions and a profound sense of loss.
