In the summer of 2006, a 43-year-old man named Patrick Ratto vanished, leaving his family with years of unanswered questions. On July 25, 2006, Patrick, a resident of Burnaby, British Columbia, was last seen by a coworker as he left his job at a tech company called Teradici around 1:30 in the afternoon, before his shift had ended. He has not been seen or heard from since that day. His car was found parked near his workplace at the corner of Willingdon and Canada Way. The day he disappeared, Patrick withdrew $60 from an ATM, but none of his credit cards were ever used again. This detail led his wife to believe he may have only been planning a brief trip, perhaps by ferry. His disappearance was profoundly out of character, a fact that immediately concerned his loved ones. Patrick is described as a Caucasian male, standing at 6'2" and weighing around 170 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes. He had a small goatee with some grey in it. At the time he went missing, he was wearing a distinctive black splint on his left forearm, a result of a motorcycle accident that had occurred a month prior in which he badly broke his hand. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a beige t-shirt, white running shoes, and a black windbreaker with white markings. Family and friends thought that perhaps he had gone for a walk, possibly on Burnaby Mountain which he was known to frequent, and may have fallen and been incapacitated by his recent injury. In the wake of his disappearance, Patrick's family initiated extensive search efforts. They received help from BC Ferries to circulate missing person posters and conducted their own searches throughout Burnaby and Vancouver. Following a tip that he might have been seen in the Burnaby Lake area on July 26, search dog teams were brought in to scour the location, but these efforts yielded no concrete leads. His wife expressed the deep pain and difficulty of not knowing what happened, stating, "It's very hard to move forward. We need to resolve this so we can move on." The case of Patrick Ratto is a story of sudden and unexplained absence, leaving a void in the lives of his family and friends. The known facts are that he left work early one afternoon, withdrew a small amount of cash, and was never definitively seen again, a perplexing situation that has left his loved ones seeking closure for many years.
