In the summer of 2016, the community of Salmon Arm, British Columbia, was marked by the unsettling disappearance of 46-year-old Deanna Wertz. On the morning of July 19, Deanna was at her residence on Yankee Flats Road. An avid and experienced hiker, she was known to enjoy long walks in the wooded terrain surrounding her home. It is believed she set out for one such hike that day, but she was never seen or heard from again.
Her sudden vanishing left behind her personal belongings, deepening the mystery and the anguish for her family and friends who described her as a vibrant, kind, and nature-loving woman.
Immediately following her disappearance, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP initiated extensive investigative efforts. Searches of the vast and challenging landscape around Yankee Flats began right away and continued for years, yet no trace of Deanna was found. Her case was particularly troubling as she was one of several women to go missing from the North Okanagan-Shuswap region within a relatively short period. Despite the circumstances, authorities stated that after a thorough and comprehensive investigation, no evidence had been uncovered to suggest that the circumstances of her disappearance were criminal in nature. For years, her family, friends, and community were left without answers, holding on to the hope that she might one day be found.
For more than ten years, the case remained unresolved, a lingering source of pain for all who knew her. The silence was finally broken in September 2026, when civilian dog trainers discovered human remains in a densely wooded area off Yankee Flats Road, not far from where Deanna was last seen. The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP confirmed the remains were positively identified as Deanna Mildred Wertz, bringing the decade-long missing person investigation to a close. Authorities reiterated that criminality was not suspected in her death. This somber discovery provided a painful but definitive answer to the long-standing questions about what had happened to her. In the end, the official conclusion was that Deanna Wertz, a woman who loved to hike the rugged trails near her home, had tragically perished in the wilderness she so enjoyed. Out of respect for her family's privacy, officials announced that no further details would be released.Last Seen: Jul 19, 2016
