On February 27, 1990, 33-year-old David Arthur Strom, along with Mickey Aus and Tracy Hill, disappeared in the Gulf of Alaska when the vessel they were on, the 54-foot steel trawler J Aus, is believed to have sunk. The boat was en route from Blaine, Washington, to King Cove, Alaska, when it encountered severe weather conditions. Search and rescue efforts were significantly hindered by the extreme weather, which included 60-knot winds and seas reaching up to 27 feet.
