Fabian Hernandez, a 35-year-old Hispanic man from Hondo, Texas, was shot and killed in his hometown on the evening of October 11, 2023. Police were sent to the 1300 block of Avenue D about 8:20 p.m. after a 911 hang-up call; officers found Hernandez in the roadway with a gunshot wound. He was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio and pronounced dead.

The Hondo Police Department opened a homicide investigation; the department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit worked the scene alongside a Texas Ranger and staff from the Medina County District Attorney’s Office. Investigators recovered a firearm believed to be the weapon used. Authorities early on identified a juvenile person of interest and later arrested 17-year-old Christian James Hernandez of Hondo, who was charged in connection with Fabian Hernandez’s death. As of May 2024 the case was proceeding through the court system.
