On New Year's Day of 2022, a sense of shock rippled through the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Derrick Eugene Joseph Williams, a 31-year-old Black man, was found slain in the parking lot of a BP gas station located near the intersection of Bates Street and Virginia Avenue. The call to the police was made at approximately 11:25 a.m., and upon their arrival, they discovered Williams with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
