Anthony Haro, a 33-year-old resident of San Diego, California, tragically lost his life on November 14, 2022, in a fatal shooting incident in the Chollas View neighborhood. The incident occurred early in the morning, shortly after 6 a.m., when patrol officers responded to a report of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Haro suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite being transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital, he was pronounced dead at 9:24 a.m.
The shooting led to a significant police response, including the involvement of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Eugene Martinez, was initially believed to be barricaded in his residence. However, after a thorough search, officers discovered that Martinez had fled the scene. He was later apprehended in a parking lot in the Clairemont Mesa area, along with a 51-year-old female companion whose role in the incident is still under investigation.
The motive behind the shooting appears to be a dispute between neighbors over noise. According to reports, Haro and Martinez had an argument that escalated when Martinez armed himself with a handgun and shot Haro. This altercation was witnessed by Haro's twin brother, Mark, who recounted the events leading up to the shooting. Mark described how the argument began over noise from Martinez working on his car, which disturbed Haro's children who were asleep at the time. The confrontation turned violent, resulting in Haro being shot through the door's window screen.
Following the shooting, Martinez was charged with murder and is being held without bail. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives working to clarify the involvement of the female detainee, Marisa Perez, who is also facing charges for allegedly assisting Martinez in evading authorities. The tragic incident has left Haro's family, including his three children, in deep grief, and a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support them with funeral and other expenses.
