Carlyle Phillips, a 29-year-old resident of Cypress, California, tragically lost his life on July 24, 2022, in a shooting incident at Peck Park in San Pedro. The shooting occurred around 3:50 p.m. during a car show and a weekly softball game, events that had drawn hundreds of people to the park. Phillips, along with Tashman Williams, 31, of Compton, was one of the two fatalities in the incident, which also left six other individuals injured.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed that Phillips died from multiple gunshot wounds, categorizing his death as a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that it stemmed from an altercation among individuals at the park, rather than gang-related violence. In the immediate aftermath, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched a citywide tactical alert and treated the entire park as a crime scene. Despite the large crowd present at the time, no arrests were made initially, and the police urged anyone with information to come forward.
In September 2022, the LAPD, in collaboration with the FBI and various divisions within the department, arrested four suspects in connection with the shooting. The suspects, identified as Raynard French, 56, Travion McCraw, 41, Antoine Newsome, 41, and Kenyon Siler, 48, were taken into custody on suspicion of murder. However, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office requested further investigation before proceeding with charges. As a result, three of the suspects were released from custody, while McCraw remained behind bars due to a hold from the California Department of Corrections.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to seek additional evidence and information to build a stronger case against the suspects. The community has been deeply affected by the incident, with calls for increased safety measures and a thorough examination of the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
