Florentino Higuera, aged 43, tragically lost his life on January 11, 2020, in Fresno, California. The incident occurred in southeast Fresno, where Higuera was shot in the chest outside a home near McKenzie Avenue and Ninth Street. The Fresno Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert and found Higuera critically injured. Despite being rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.
The initial investigation revealed that there was a relationship between the shooter and the victim, although the exact nature of this relationship remained unclear at the time.
The case took a significant turn when authorities arrested Jesus Serena Sr. and his son, Jesus Serena Jr., in connection with Higuera's murder. The prosecution argued that the murder was the culmination of a day filled with disputes involving Higuera's friend, George Castellanos, and Jesus Serena Sr. Both men were reportedly involved with the same woman, leading to a confrontation at a bus stop earlier that day. Surveillance footage captured the altercation, and Castellanos later informed the police that Serena Sr. had threatened to return with someone to escalate the situation.
On the day of the murder, surveillance cameras recorded Jesus Serena Sr. picking up his son near Heaton Elementary School. Shortly after, gunshots were fired at Castellanos' home, resulting in Higuera's death. Castellanos, who was present at the scene, identified Serena Sr. as the shooter, although he later admitted to being under the influence of drugs and intentionally lying to the police about certain details. Despite this, the prosecution presented evidence, including surveillance footage of Serena Sr.'s vehicle leaving the scene shortly after the shooting.
The trial for the father and son duo began in early 2022. The defense argued that the case was built on assumptions and lacked concrete evidence. They pointed out that no murder weapon or shell casings were found at the crime scene and that the cell phone data used to place Serena Sr. at the scene was inconclusive. After a lengthy trial, the jury ultimately acquitted both Jesus Serena Sr. and Jesus Serena Jr. of all charges, including murder and assault. The case highlighted the complexities and challenges of securing a conviction in a murder trial, especially when key evidence is based on witness testimony and circumstantial evidence.
