Carlos Valdovinos, a 16-year-old from San Diego, California, tragically lost his life on May 23, 2019, in a shooting incident that occurred in the Linda Vista neighborhood. The incident took place near Kelly Street Park, where Valdovinos was fatally shot in the upper body. According to reports, the shooting happened around 6 p.m. when Valdovinos and his friends were involved in an altercation with the driver of a four-door sedan.
The driver, later identified as Andy Chanh Phonsongkham, was the lone occupant of the vehicle and opened fire on Valdovinos and his friends. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital by his friends, Valdovinos succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Valdovinos' death revealed that the shooting was gang-related. Phonsongkham, who was 20 years old at the time, was a member of a local gang. The motive for the shooting was retaliation for an earlier assault on a fellow gang member. On the day of the incident, Phonsongkham armed himself with a semiautomatic handgun and drove to the Linda Vista neighborhood in search of rival gang members. Upon encountering Valdovinos and his friends, Phonsongkham opened fire, fatally striking Valdovinos in the back. Three bullets also hit a nearby home, but fortunately, the occupants were not injured.
Following the shooting, Phonsongkham was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of shooting at an occupied residence. The case proceeded to trial, where Phonsongkham was found guilty of all charges. In February 2022, he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, with additional sentences for the attempted murders and firearms offenses. The court also imposed an additional 150 years to life for the murder and related charges. Phonsongkham's defense argued that his age should be considered in the sentencing, but the court upheld the life sentence.
