On July 13, 2018, Sequoyah Callahan Gavin, an 18-year-old resident of Hemet, California, was tragically shot in the head and killed in the Stoney Mountain Ranch neighborhood of northwest Hemet. The incident occurred at a home on the 1100 block of Stepstone Court, near Warren Road and Esplanade Avenue. Emergency responders, including Hemet Police and Fire Departments, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies, and other emergency personnel, arrived at the scene around 8 p.m.
Despite their efforts to perform CPR and other life-saving measures, Sequoyah Gavin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the shooting, the Hemet Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Over the course of four days, investigators conducted numerous interviews and gathered evidence. On July 17, 2018, Hemet Police arrested 22-year-old Vincent Calderon in connection with the shooting. Calderon was taken into custody around 4 p.m. and charged with murder. His bail was set at $1 million. The police did not disclose a motive for the shooting or any extenuating circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation remained active and ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
Sequoyah Gavin was remembered as a beloved member of his community. He attended Lilac School and Valley Center High School, where he was known for his involvement in sports, particularly football and rugby. He was also a devoted member of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, where he was affectionately called “Coy.” His death was a significant loss to his family, friends, and the broader community, who held a talking stick ceremony to honor his memory and seek understanding of the tragic event.
The case against Vincent Calderon proceeded through the legal system, with the charges of murder carrying significant implications. The community of Hemet and those who knew Sequoyah Gavin closely followed the developments, seeking justice for the young man whose life was cut short.
