Ivan Solis, a 25-year-old resident of Canyon Country, Santa Clarita, California, was tragically shot and killed on July 11, 2017. The incident occurred in the early hours at Begonias Lane Park, where Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies responded to a "shots fired" report around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Solis lying near his bicycle with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after, at 5:27 a.m.
Friends and family described Solis as a good person who was striving to overcome addiction, particularly motivated by the birth of his daughter.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of two suspects: Nicholas Colletta, a 20-year-old man from Saugus, and Jacqueline Arreola, a 24-year-old woman from Newhall. Colletta was identified as the primary shooter who issued a gang challenge to Solis before fatally shooting him. The challenge involved asking Solis where he was from, a common tactic used by gang members to assert dominance and provoke violence. Following the shooting, both Colletta and Arreola fled the scene in a vehicle.
Colletta faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder with the allegation that the crime was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang, possession of a firearm by a felon with three prior convictions, unlawful possession of ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm. Jurors found him guilty on all counts, and he was sentenced to 60 years to life in state prison. Arreola, who was charged with being an accessory after the fact, pleaded no contest and testified against Colletta during his trial. Her sentencing was scheduled for May 20, 2019.
