On November 6, 2023, 12-year-old Willians Lemus Ayala was found deceased by the roadside near the intersection of Sand Canyon Road and Placerita Canyon Road in Santa Clarita, California. Responding to a call at approximately 6:30 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies discovered Ayala's body, initially misidentifying him as an adult male.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner later confirmed his identity and determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head, classifying it as a homicide.
In the early stages of the investigation, detectives considered the possibility of gang involvement due to the circumstances surrounding Ayala's death. However, as the investigation progressed, this theory was reassessed. Authorities located another juvenile who was with Ayala at the time of the incident. According to statements, the two minors were handling a firearm when it unintentionally discharged, resulting in Ayala's fatal injury. Lieutenant Arturo Spencer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau indicated that the shooting appeared to be accidental, stemming from the minors "messing around with the gun."
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with Ayala's death. The identity of the other juvenile involved has not been disclosed due to their age. Investigators plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for review to determine if any charges are warranted.
