Jonathan Matias "JD" De Guzman, a dedicated officer with the San Diego Police Department, tragically lost his life on July 28, 2016, in San Diego, California. Officer De Guzman, who was 43 years old at the time of his death, had served with the department for 16 years and was assigned to the Gang Suppression Unit. On the night of his death, Officer De Guzman and his partner were conducting a routine subject stop near the intersection of Acacia Grove Way and 38th Street.
During the stop, the officers observed two men walking in the area. As they approached, the men split up, prompting Officer De Guzman's partner to exit the patrol car and question one of the individuals. Without warning, the suspect pulled out a handgun and opened fire, shooting Officer De Guzman's partner in the neck and then firing multiple shots at Officer De Guzman, who was still seated in the patrol car. Officer De Guzman was struck five times and succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as Jesse Michael Gomez, fled the scene but was later found hiding in a nearby ravine. He was apprehended and charged with multiple offenses, including murder, attempted murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The legal proceedings against Gomez were extensive. In September 2021, a jury found him guilty of all charges and recommended the death penalty. Subsequently, in March 2022, a judge sentenced Gomez to death for the murder of Officer De Guzman. This case highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the severe consequences for those who commit violent acts against them.
Officer De Guzman's death had a profound impact on the San Diego community and his fellow officers. He was remembered as a dedicated and compassionate officer who was deeply committed to his family and his duty. In honor of his service and sacrifice, the Palomar Street Bridge was renamed the Jonathan M. de Guzman Memorial Bridge in July 2018. His legacy continues to be honored by his colleagues, family, and the community he served.
