The investigation into Patricia Sigala-Salva's death led to the arrest of three individuals the following day. Juan Carlos Santana, 45, and his son, Andres Santana, 22, were convicted in connection with the murder. Juan Carlos Santana was found guilty of murder, burglary, and receiving stolen property. The jury also confirmed that he personally fired the gun that killed Patricia Sigala-Salva. Andres Santana pleaded "no contest" to voluntary manslaughter and admitted to the special allegation that a gun was used in the crime. Juan Santana's girlfriend, Deborah Curiel, was also convicted of receiving stolen property and acting as an accessory after the fact.
The motive behind the murder was linked to a dispute over missing money and jewelry. Patricia Sigala-Salva had been renting a room in her home to Deborah Curiel, who was living there with Juan Santana and his son. When Patricia noticed the missing items, she asked them to leave. This confrontation escalated, leading to Juan Santana shooting her. During the trial, it was argued that while Andres Santana was an aider and abettor to the killing, it was Juan Santana who pulled the trigger.
