On October 22, 2013, 13-year-old Andrew "Andy" Lopez was fatally shot by Sonoma County sheriff's deputy Erick Gelhaus in Santa Rosa, California. The incident occurred in the Moorland Avenue neighborhood, where Lopez was walking through a vacant lot carrying an airsoft gun designed to resemble an AK-47 assault rifle. The orange tip of the airsoft gun, which would have indicated it was a toy, had been broken off, making it appear more realistic.
Gelhaus, who was patrolling the area with another deputy, mistook the airsoft gun for a real firearm and opened fire on Lopez, resulting in his death.
