Michael Soto, a 17-year-old from Whittier, California, was tragically shot and killed on March 26, 2012. The investigation into Soto's death led to the arrest of Eudiel Lopez, a 19-year-old homeless man with ties to the Whittier area. Lopez was apprehended about six hours after the shooting, just a few blocks away from the crime scene. Authorities recovered a handgun believed to be the murder weapon, and ballistics tests were planned to confirm its use in the shooting. Lopez had a criminal history, including a recent arrest for possession of methamphetamines, and had been released from jail just eight days before the shooting.
Following his arrest, Lopez was held in lieu of $2 million bail at Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles. His next court appearance was scheduled for April 24, 2012, at the Whittier Municipal Court.
