Bryon Schletewitz, aged 27, was tragically murdered on September 5, 1980, in Fresno, California. Bryon was the son of the owners of Fran's Market, a family-run general store. On that fateful evening, Bryon had persuaded his father to go home early, taking on the responsibility of closing the store himself. Alongside him were Josephine Rocha, a high school senior working part-time to save for a car, and Douglas White, a college student with aspirations of starting a real estate business.
The three were brutally shot to death in what was later revealed to be a meticulously planned revenge plot orchestrated from within the walls of Folsom Prison.
The mastermind behind this heinous crime was Clarence Ray Allen, who was already serving a life sentence for the murder of Mary Kitts in 1974. Allen had ordered the murders of Bryon Schletewitz and the others as retribution for Bryon's testimony against him in the Kitts case. Allen's son, Kenneth Allen, carried out the murders on his father's orders. The crime was part of a broader conspiracy that included plans to eliminate several other individuals who had testified against Clarence Allen or were perceived as threats.
Following the murders, Clarence Ray Allen was charged with multiple counts, including the murders of Bryon Schletewitz, Douglas White, and Josephine Rocha, as well as conspiracy to commit murder. In 1982, Allen was convicted of these crimes and sentenced to death. The case drew significant attention due to the cold-blooded nature of the killings and the fact that they were orchestrated from prison. Allen's execution by lethal injection took place in 2006, bringing a measure of closure to the families of the victims, though the pain of their loss endures.
