Matthew Nicol, a 25-year-old man from Merritt Island, Florida, tragically lost his life on March 3, 2021, during a violent home invasion. Nicol, who was identified as the victim of a fatal shooting, was at his residence on East Hall Road when the incident occurred. The perpetrators, dressed in replica law enforcement attire, including tactical pants, shirts, helmets, communication devices, rifles, and replica Sheriff and DEA patches, posed as law enforcement drug agents to gain entry into
Nicol's home. During the invasion, both Nicol and his dog were shot and killed.
The investigation into Matthew Nicol's death led to the indictment of five men: Anthony Davila, 23, of Cocoa; Cory Cabaniss, 25, of Cocoa; Chase Harrison, 28, of Rockledge; Brian Vogel, 29, of Cocoa; and David Foreman-Taylor, 23, of Cocoa. These individuals were charged with First Degree Felony Murder, Armed Burglary of a Dwelling Inflicting Death, and Cruelty to Animals. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office conducted a thorough investigation, which included testimony from a Crime Scene Investigator, an Agent, and a lay witness before the Grand Jury returned with the indictments.
The suspects targeted Nicol's residence with the intent to commit an armed robbery, seeking drugs and drug proceeds. The group fled the scene after the shooting, but a months-long investigation by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office led to their capture. All five men are currently being held without bond at the Brevard County Jail. The investigation revealed that the suspects' attempt to overcome any resistance from the occupants of the residence involved dressing in replica law enforcement attire to deceive and intimidate.
The case against the suspects is ongoing, with no trial date set as of yet. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from the public to aid in the investigation.
