Nelson Vega, a 39-year-old bartender from Hollywood, FL, tragically lost his life on September 13, 2020, in a violent carjacking incident. Vega had just finished his shift at J.P. Mulligan's sports bar in Pembroke Pines and was dropping off his girlfriend at her home in Miramar. As he walked her to the door, two 16-year-old boys, who were on the lookout for a car to steal, approached his white Mercedes-Benz. The teens, armed with guns, attempted to take the car.
When Vega tried to intervene, they shot him multiple times, resulting in fatal injuries. Vega was shot in the chest and pelvis and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The two teenagers involved in the incident, Nathaniel Williams and Gershon Woods, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and carjacking with a firearm. Initially, they faced second-degree murder charges due to the inability of the grand jury to convene during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the case progressed, they were indicted on first-degree murder charges and were set to be tried as adults. The teens had a history of run-ins with the law and were reportedly looking for a car to go joyriding when they encountered Vega.
The legal proceedings against Williams and Woods have been closely followed, with both suspects being held without bond. The case has highlighted issues related to juvenile crime and the severity of charges that young offenders can face when involved in violent crimes. Vega's death has left a profound impact on his family and friends, who remember him as a gentle and charismatic individual with a passion for bartending and a recently acquired real estate license. The community has mourned his loss, and his family continues to seek justice for the senseless act that took his life.
