Roy Gissendanner, a 63-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on June 22, 2020, in Hollywood, Florida. The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. when Broward Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a shooting at 5831 S.W. 27th Street in West Park. Upon arrival, they found Gissendanner lying on the grass near a parking lot with gunshot wounds to his head and torso.
Despite efforts by fire rescue personnel to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:15 p.m.
The investigation revealed that Gissendanner's vehicle, a 2003 gold Ford Taurus, was stolen following the shooting. Surveillance footage showed the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Ian Jackson, walking in the area and interacting with Gissendanner. The footage captured Gissendanner exiting his vehicle, at which point Jackson shot him at least twice before stealing the car and fleeing the scene.
Shortly after the murder of Roy Gissendanner, Jackson committed another homicide in Miami Gardens. At around 4:19 p.m., Jackson arrived at a gas station in the stolen Ford Taurus and confronted O'Neil William, whom he also shot. William managed to drive away but eventually crashed into a wall. Jackson was later apprehended by the Broward Sheriff's Office and Miami Gardens Police Department, with assistance from the United States Marshal’s Service Violent Fugitive Task Force, on July 1, 2020.
Ian Jackson was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Roy Gissendanner and second-degree murder in the death of O'Neil William. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Turner-Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, where he is being held without bond. The investigations by both the Broward Sheriff's Office and Miami Gardens Police Department are ongoing to determine the motive behind the shootings.
