Lovely Mathurin, a 23-year-old woman from Delray Beach, FL, tragically lost her life on October 8, 2019, in a murder-suicide incident. Mathurin, who was of Haitian descent, was fatally shot by her 30-year-old boyfriend, Yves Romain. The incident occurred at their apartment in the Village at Delray complex. Romain, who was a Lyft driver, called 911 on the morning of the incident and confessed to shooting Mathurin before turning the gun on himself.
The couple's 10-month-old son was found unharmed in a car seat inside the apartment, while their 3-year-old son was not present at the time.
The 911 call revealed that Romain was calm and composed as he informed the dispatcher about the shooting. He mentioned that Mathurin had cheated on him, although the exact details were unclear due to muffled screams in the background. Despite the dispatcher's attempts to dissuade him, Romain ended the call and subsequently took his own life. When the police arrived at the scene, they found both Mathurin and Romain deceased. The children were placed in the care of relatives following the incident.
This tragic event marked at least the seventh instance of a partner killing a current or former partner in Palm Beach County that year. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of domestic violence in the area. There were no further arrests or litigations related to the incident, as the perpetrator, Yves Romain, had already taken his own life. The community was left to mourn the loss of Lovely Mathurin and to support the surviving children.
