Everett Davon Thompson, a 38-year-old African American male, was found dead on December 23, 2018, in a rented pickup truck in rural St. Johns County, near Saint Augustine, Florida. Thompson, who was also known as "Rabbit," was a resident of Jacksonville and the president and CEO of Fastidious Auto Sales. On the day of his death, Thompson had traveled to St.
Augustine to meet with Vermount James Anderson, a 37-year-old man who owed him several thousand dollars.
During their meeting on Poa Boy Farms Road, off County Road 214, Anderson allegedly produced a firearm and fired a shot through the open driver-side door of the pickup truck, striking Thompson and causing his death. Thompson's body was discovered behind the wheel of the truck around 3 p.m. on December 23, 2018. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the incident, which led to the arrest of Anderson on April 8, 2019. Anderson was charged with first-degree murder and was taken into custody at a home on Bruen Street. He was held without bond.
The investigation revealed that the motive behind the shooting was the debt Anderson owed to Thompson. Detectives believe that Thompson had gone to St. Augustine to collect the money he was owed when the confrontation occurred.
