Jamie Humet, a 47-year-old white male librarian, was tragically found shot to death in his car on the morning of December 10, 2018, in Miami Gardens, FL. The incident occurred outside a credit union at Northwest 2nd Avenue and 207th Street. Humet had been a dedicated librarian with Miami-Dade County for 21 years. His family believes he had stopped at an ATM at the Dade County Federal Credit Union the night before to withdraw money.
Despite having four $10 bills in his pocket, the assailants did not take the money, indicating that the motive might not have been purely financial.
The investigation into Jamie Humet's death led to significant developments nearly two years later. On November 23, 2020, police arrested 19-year-old Shaun Fortune in connection with Humet's murder. Fortune, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was charged with second-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. Surveillance footage showed a suspect in a black hoodie running towards a getaway car, a newer model white KIA Optima, after the shooting. Fortune made his first court appearance and was sent to Juvenile Court due to his age at the time of the crime.
Further investigation revealed that an anonymous caller had provided crucial information to Crime Stoppers in April 2019. The caller reported that Fortune had been showing off news videos of the incident and claimed the shooting was an accident. The caller also mentioned that three people were in the white car and had instructed Fortune to rob Humet, handing him the gun. Fingerprints found inside Humet's vehicle matched those of Fortune, providing enough probable cause for an arrest warrant.
A second arrest was made on December 2, 2020, when 22-year-old Isaiah John Williams was taken into custody. Williams was charged with second-degree murder and attempted robbery in connection with Humet's death. The arrests of Fortune and Williams marked significant progress in the case, bringing some measure of justice to Humet's family and the community.
