Jacob Walsh, a 25-year-old resident of Jupiter, Florida, tragically lost his life on June 7, 2016, in Boca Raton. Walsh, a former soccer standout at Jupiter High School and founder of the private-line clothing company Lost Key Co., was fatally shot during an apparent drug deal gone wrong. The incident occurred at the San Marco at Broken Sound apartment complex, located near Military Trail and Yamato Road.
After being shot, Walsh managed to run from the complex’s clubhouse but later collapsed and succumbed to his injuries at Delray Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that Walsh was involved in a marijuana transaction with two men, Matthew Lewis and Jonah Horne. During the deal, a scuffle ensued, leading to Walsh being shot. Boca Raton police quickly identified Lewis and Horne as suspects. Lewis, who was already serving time in a northern Florida prison on an unrelated charge, was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm. Horne, on the other hand, fled to Northern Ireland, where he was eventually detained and faced a lengthy legal battle against extradition to the United States.
Horne's extradition process was prolonged, with his defense arguing that he could face inhumane punishment if returned to the U.S. However, the European Court of Human Rights dismissed his application, citing a long history of cooperation between the U.S. and the U.K. on extradition matters. Horne was ultimately extradited and is awaiting trial in Palm Beach County. Meanwhile, Lewis has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and his sentencing has been deferred, making him a potential witness in Horne's case.
