Daniel John Krysalka, a 20-year-old from Ocala, Florida, tragically lost his life on March 8, 2015. Krysalka, a former standout kicker at Forest High School and a walk-on at the University of Florida, was known for his love of football, soccer, hunting, and fishing. On the morning of his death, he had planned to go fishing with his father and uncle.
However, his life was cut short in a tragic incident involving a firearm.
The events leading to Krysalka's death unfolded in a bedroom at a residence in Ocala. Jefferson Davis Guinn IV, a 20-year-old friend of Krysalka, was handling a Kel-Tec 9mm handgun. According to reports, Guinn had never cleaned the weapon and was showing it to Krysalka and another friend, Ethan Logan Hayhurst. After disassembling the gun, Guinn was unable to reassemble it, prompting the group to watch a YouTube video for guidance. Hayhurst eventually reassembled the gun and handed it back to Guinn, who then loaded it, chambered a round, and pointed it at Krysalka's face. The gun discharged, striking Krysalka and causing him to fall backward onto the floor.
The Ocala Police Department responded to the scene and found Krysalka deceased despite lifesaving attempts. Guinn was visibly distraught and made no statement after being advised of his rights. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter. During the investigation, it was revealed that Guinn had pointed the unloaded gun at someone at a party the previous night, an action for which he had been chastised by several people.
In October 2015, Guinn pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The sentencing hearing was filled with emotional testimony from family members and friends of both Krysalka and Guinn. Guinn read a letter of apology to Krysalka's family, expressing his remorse for the tragic incident. The judge noted Guinn's acceptance of responsibility and the difficulty of the decision in determining the sentence.
