Carla Merhige, a 33-year-old woman from Jupiter, Florida, tragically lost her life on November 26, 2009. Carla, along with her twin sister Lisa Knight, their 6-year-old cousin Makayla Sitton, and their aunt Raymonde Joseph, were all victims of a horrific shooting that took place during a family Thanksgiving dinner. The perpetrator was Paul Michael Merhige, Carla's 35-year-old brother, who opened fire on his relatives after waiting for three hours at the family gathering.
This brutal act of violence shocked the community and left a lasting impact on the surviving family members.
Paul Merhige had a troubled history with his family, including past incidents of domestic violence complaints between him and Carla. On the night of the murders, he reportedly stated, "I've been waiting 20 years to do this," before carrying out the attack. He killed his twin sisters, Carla and Lisa, who was pregnant at the time, along with their young cousin and aunt. The massacre was premeditated, as Paul had purchased multiple firearms shortly before the incident.
Following the murders, a massive manhunt ensued, with a $25,000 reward offered for information leading to Paul's arrest. He was eventually captured on January 2, 2010, after being featured on "America's Most Wanted." Paul Merhige pleaded guilty to all charges on October 27, 2011, and was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The case also led to a lawsuit filed by Jim and Muriel Sitton, the parents of Makayla, against Paul's parents, alleging that they could have prevented the tragedy. However, in 2014, the 4th District Court of Appeal ruled that Paul's parents could not be held liable for the massacre.
