On a September evening in 2008, a trip to the Puerto Rican Day Parade in Philadelphia ended in tragedy for 24-year-old Matthew B. Novak, a Caucasian male from Mullica Hill, New Jersey. The night took a turn when the car he and his friends were in would not start near 6th and Green Streets. In an attempt to find help, Novak flagged down a passing blue Chevrolet Impala with New Jersey license plates. Inside the vehicle were three men who seemingly offered assistance.
