On February 18, 2020, 17-year-old Tristan Jones, a Black male, was shot multiple times in front of a home on Mira Colina in Channelview, Texas. Despite efforts by a deputy to stop the bleeding using field tourniquets, Tristan was pronounced dead at the hospital. His girlfriend, Tyvesha Holloway, mentioned that she had spoken to him hours before the shooting, and he had told her he was with two friends on the way to see her. However, she was not home at the time.
When she returned, she saw police lights and later learned that Tristan had been killed. A neighbor in the area reported hearing gunfire, but the suspects were gone by the time he got outside. Detectives had little information on the two suspects or the vehicle they used to drive off.
Harris County deputies later identified one of the suspects responsible for the murder of Tristan Jones. Jabraylon Pleasant, 18, was charged with the murder and was in Nacogdoches County Jail. Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at around 3:20 a.m. on February 19, 2020, and found Tristan with multiple gunshot wounds. Surveillance video footage obtained from a nearby residence showed two suspects following Tristan as they walked from a retention pond behind the homes into the cul-de-sac area. The video showed both suspects extending one arm each towards Tristan, followed by several flashes from each individual's hand. Tristan fell to the ground, and one suspect returned to him, followed by more flashes before running away a second time. A witness identified Pleasant as one of the suspects, describing his attire on the night of the shooting. Pleasant denied any involvement in the shooting, stating that the last time he saw Tristan was in September 2019. Authorities noted that Pleasant had been in jail for robbery in 2019 but was released on a $10,000 bond.
