On November 4, 2019, Jose Jesus Moncivais, a 42-year-old man from Dayton, Texas, was tragically shot and killed at his residence on County Road 685 in south Liberty County. The incident occurred following a domestic altercation. Moncivais' stepson, Fabian Makell Miranda, who is 22 years old, claimed that he shot Moncivais in self-defense as Moncivais was allegedly beating his mother.
However, the investigation led by Liberty County Sheriff’s Lead Investigator Travis Pierce found that the evidence did not support Miranda's claim of self-defense.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Clarissa Moncivais, the mother of Fabian Miranda, had called 911 to report that her son had just shot her husband. Deputies arrived at the scene and found Jose Jesus Moncivais deceased from a gunshot wound to the head. Miranda was subsequently charged with murder and placed in the Liberty County Jail.
The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the incident and the conflicting accounts of what transpired. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough investigation, including an inquest at the scene and an autopsy ordered by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Larry Wilburn. Despite Miranda's initial claim, the evidence gathered did not corroborate his version of events, leading to the murder charge.
