Gerardo Ismael “Jerry” Olivares Mancha was an 18-year-old Hispanic/Latino male who had only recently graduated from Dayton High School when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in the Dayton, Texas, area on June 28, 2023. Shortly after midnight, at about 12:10 a.m., the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office began receiving 911 calls reporting numerous gunshots being fired at a mobile home on Private Road 4894B, a secluded dead-end road off the FM 1413 area south of Highway 90.

Jerry was inside his bedroom playing video games when the barrage of gunfire struck the residence. Investigators said one of the rounds penetrated the exterior of the home, continued through his bedroom and gaming chair, and struck him in the back. Deputies arriving at the scene found him critically wounded. He was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead.

His mother and two sisters, who were reported to be 16 and 20 years old, were also inside the home during the attack. None of them was physically injured, even though numerous bullets struck the residence. Investigators found rounds had entered areas including the living room and his mother’s bedroom, and vehicles parked in the driveway had also been hit. The amount and pattern of the gunfire led investigators to believe more than one firearm may have been used, with at least one weapon believed to have been high-caliber.

From the beginning, detectives considered the possibility that the residence had been deliberately targeted. The house was located on an isolated gravel road that ended nearby, making the location less likely to be reached accidentally by passing traffic. At the same time, investigators did not rule out the possibility that the shooters had intended to attack another residence and had gone to the wrong address. Authorities publicly acknowledged that the motive remained unknown. People who knew Jerry said he had no known enemies, adding to the uncertainty surrounding why the home was fired upon.

A witness reported seeing a light-colored pickup truck leaving the area shortly after the shots were fired. Authorities did not publicly establish how many people were inside the truck and did not release a description of an identified shooter. In the days after the killing, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office said investigators were following a couple of leads. One person investigated as part of those leads was subsequently ruled out as a suspect, leaving detectives still searching for whoever was responsible.

Jerry's death came only weeks after his graduation from Dayton High School. On June 30, family members, friends, classmates, teachers and other community members gathered outside the school for a candlelight vigil. Those who knew him remembered him as someone who was kind to others and willing to approach people who appeared lonely or discouraged. A former teacher recalled that Jerry could talk with almost anyone and had a way of brightening people's days.

Publicly available reporting reviewed through October 2026 does not identify anyone as having been arrested or charged in connection with Jerry's killing, and no trial or conviction has been publicly reported. The last detailed reports on the investigation described the case as active, with detectives pursuing leads and trying to determine who was in the vehicle, who fired into the home, and whether Jerry's residence was truly the intended target.
